How to Create Great Bench Pressers

Learn from an expert competitor and coach

I know it seems strange that TFC has a speaker talking about of all things, the bench press. While not that conducive to sprinting, selling your program is. Unfortunately, many athletes will equate bench press gains with overall program success. If their bench isn’t going up, the coach must not know much and therefore everything doesn’t work. Knowing this, we have a rare chance to get the insights from someone who is not only an elite bench presser (benched 775 pounds) but a coach who understands what it takes to truly achieve bench press gains. JL Holdsworth is an expert in the bench press who has spent years studying various programs, including Westside Barbell, but has learned to adapt his knowledge to the high school athlete.

Why most high school bench press programs don’t work and what you can do to change that

Most high school weightlifting programs are generic programs lifted from a college program, internet article, or something that someone learned from Bigger Faster Stronger back in the day. Whether you have the 125-pound freshman who struggles with pushups or your 2x bodyweight presser, we give them both the same workouts and expect the same results.

How to determine the right program for each athlete

JL will show you way to determine what kind of bench presser your athlete is and auxillary work that will help him progress properly without developing the rounded shoulder athlete who has a great bench but can’t move. JL will also lay out a basic program and let you know when it is time to change the program into something more appropriate for each athlete.

How cookie cutter programs can cause over-training which will lead to injury problems

The problem with the workout of the month program is that it doesn’t take into account many factors that go into your athletes life. Is it appropriate to do all five sets because a Russian guy from the 1980-something steroid era said so? JL will show you when it’s appropriate to make changes in your athletes workout.

When you walk out of JL’s presentation, you will have a workout that is easy to implement and appropriate for any level of athlete. In addition, you will have the knowledge to make assessments to help your athlete reach their bench press goals.
